MOAKI'I was started by two young founders, Sam and Jacob, with one simple goal: to make water easier to access - and build a lifestyle brand that feels as good as it looks.
The idea became clear during a trip to Maui. At Napili Bay, Sam experienced stand-up paddling in its simplest form: calm water, steady movement, and that quiet reset you only get on the ocean. It wasn’t the start of a lifelong paddle obsession - it was the moment the value of being on the water finally made total sense.
Back in the Carolinas, we realized something: many people love the idea of getting on the water, but logistics get in the way. If you don’t own a boat, have limited storage, or don’t want to deal with roof racks and bulky gear, access becomes limited.
And when it came to equipment, most options felt like two extremes:
- High-end gear that felt overbuilt and overpriced
- Cheap gear that felt unstable, flimsy, and disposable
So after graduating in 2024 (Sam from ECU, Jacob from Furman), we set out to build the in-between - done right: inflatable gear that feels solid, looks clean, packs down easily, and makes spontaneous water days realistic.
From Lake Norman, NC, we design inflatable paddle boards, docks, and kayaks for lakes, rivers, and calm coastal waters - bringing island-inspired color, flow, and ease to everyday water life in the Carolinas and beyond.
Why the name moaki'i?
MOAKI'I is a name we created, so it isn’t a direct Hawaiian dictionary word. It’s Hawaiian-inspired - built to feel like the water, the light, and the laid-back confidence of the islands.
We chose “MOA” for its sound and simplicity - short, warm, easy to say - like something you’d hear carried on a shoreline breeze. And “KI'I” can mean an “image” or “representation,” which fits what we’re building: designs that capture a feeling and carry it with you.
For us, MOAKI'I is about bringing that relaxed island energy back to home waters - through products made to get outside, move, and make memories.
