Paws on Board: The Complete Guide to SUP with Your Dog
Paws on Board: The Ultimate Guide to SUP with Your Dog
At Moakii, our "Paws Welcome" philosophy isn't just a tagline - it’s a design standard. We believe the best view of the water is framed by a pair of furry ears. However, taking your dog out requires more than just a board. It requires the right gear and a bit of "pup-aration."
Here is how to master the art of SUP with your best friend.
Choosing the Right Board for Two
Stability and durability are the non-negotiables when your dog is involved.
-
Maximum Stability (The Seeker): If you have a medium-to-large dog (40+ lbs), the Seeker is the gold standard. Its 11'6" length and 34" width provide a massive, "un-tippable" surface area that keeps you both balanced, even if your dog decides to pace from side to side.
-
Agile Utility (The Pathfinder): For smaller pups or highly experienced paddlers, the Pathfinder is ideal. It’s incredibly tough and, at ~19 lbs, it’s the easiest board to carry if you’re also juggling a leash and a bag of treats.
-
Military-Grade Durability: All Moakii boards are built with dual-layer, reinforced PVC. This means they are "claw-proof" - energetic paws and sharp nails won't puncture the board, and our UV-resistant EVA deck pads provide the perfect grip for paws.
The 4-Step Training Progression
Don't just head for the deep end! Follow this progression to ensure your dog feels like a pro.
-
Water Comfort: Ensure your dog feels safe wading and swimming in shallow water before introducing the board. If they are scared of the splashes, they won't enjoy the ride.
-
Land Introduction: Set your Moakii up in the grass at home. Let your dog sniff it and walk across the traction pad. Use treats and praise to create a positive association with "mounting" the board.
-
Shallow Water Practice: Transition to a calm, shallow shoreline. Start by kneeling in the center of the board while your dog sits or lies down in front of you. Stay in waist-deep water so a "voluntary exit" isn't scary.
-
Paddling Together: Slowly begin moving. Start with short, rhythmic strokes. Don't rush - allow your dog time to adjust to the motion and the feeling of the wind.
Essential Gear for "PUP" Boarding
Pro Secret: Never leash your dog to the board or yourself. If the board flips, you want your dog to be able to swim freely without being dragged.
-
Dog PFD (Life Jacket): Even strong swimmers get tired. Always use a life jacket with a sturdy top handle. This allows you to safely hoist them back onto the board if they decide to take an unscheduled swim.
-
Integrated Traction Pad: A wet board is slippery. Moakii boards feature deep-groove EVA pads that provide the traction your dog needs to feel secure during tight turns or choppy water.
-
Hydration is Key: Always bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl. Saltwater or stagnant lake water can make your pup sick, and the sun reflects off the water, making them thirstier than usual.
Move Up or Down?
-
Move up to the SEEKER if your dog is over 50 lbs or if you plan on bringing a cooler and a pup at the same time. The extra volume is a lifesaver.
-
Move down to the PATHFINDER if you have a small dog and want a lighter, more maneuverable board for quick afternoon sessions.
